Without question, Chris has taken irresponsibility to unhealthy levels over the years. While Lorelai chose to face up to her responsibilities when Rory came along, to grow up and make a life for herself and her daughter, Christopher went the other way entirely. When we met him in season one, he was still very much that sixteen-year-old boy. I think it was due to a multitude of things - reality creeping up way to soon, getting Lorelai pregnant, becoming a father - whatever it was, his emotional growth, his maturity, et al, did not match up with a man of his age.
What I'm trying to say is that no matter his many fuck ups along the way, the guy has grown up a LOT over the past two seasons, and for that I have to give him kudos. Some guys would have taken his sizable inheritance, his fiancée abandoning him and their child, and allowed themselves to wallow, to regress. Not Christopher. He's almost all growed up. *wipes away tears of pride*
Also, I just love the guy.
And while I think Luke was a total jackass last season, it really was rather low of Lorelai to go and do that. (Way to be Logan, Lorelai.) I don't see it that way. Because of Luke's decision to not only keep his daughter a secret from her BUT then decides to keep April from meeting this woman he purports to love and wants to marry, I think Lorelai was in the right. Luke was more than a jackass this season. He was an unfeeling oaf who wanted their relationship on his terms and his terms alone. That Lorelai didn't kick his insensitive ass to the curb earlier is the truly amazing part.
If her sleeping with Christopher had followed some random fight with Luke, I would have called foul. However, after that kind of fight and breakup, I would have been surprised had she not done something stupid. Unfortunately, she chose to do her something stupid with a guy who is still very much in love with her, but he's also an ex. And the father of her child. She sought out a familiar connection, and I can't hate on her for it. In fact, all I want to do is give her a big ol' hug, and to promise her that the next time I see Luke, I'll be sure to give him a swift kick to the shin.
Surely Luke has issues about her always being bonded to Chris through Rory. Why couldn't they have explored that? Or even go the Rory/Luke route with how he was at her graduation and moved her into Yale, while David Sutcliffe was on another show. I would have LOVED to see that, but unfortunately that ship has sailed. ASP and DP really dropped the ball in that respect. So what if the actor is on another show? Why, if Christopher is currently a part of Rory's life, didn't they show a quick phone call prior to her graduation. Maybe Gigi was sick? I mean, a million different little things could have explained his absence, but to go on any further would tread too far into fanwankery. Plus, with regards to the move to Yale, that could have easily been explained away by the scheduling mix-up.
Sigh. It breaks my heart, the many ways they dropped the ball over the years – it’s of Roswellian proportions at this point. But that has been a complaint for the last several seasons, especially with so many townie storylines figuring so prominently of late. Guh. When I think about season 1, how perfectly it straddled the line between wacky and the dramatic, it makes me want to pretend everything since has been an increasingly crappy dream.
