[WARNING: Contains spoilers for Gilmore girls!!]
I’m a bitch so it’s no wonder that the first thing that comes to mind is the pure hysteria over at TWoP, all the Luke fangirls (in the worse sense of the word) crying out in outrage, their panties all in a twist. I mean, everyone is entitled to their own OTP, and there was a time when Luke seemed like the best fit for Lorelai, but then we met Christopher and HELLO, NURSE! Yeah, I know he's been an ass and so irresponsible it makes my head hurt to think about it too long, but then you see Lauren Graham and David Sutcliffe on screen together and it's absolute magic. You can tell they like and respect each other off screen, but on screen, they bring it. There is so much there underlying everything they say (or don’t say) to one another, even in the smallest gesture or look. Now that I think about it, their relationship – the history of high school lovers permanently linked to each other with an unplanned pregnancy (child) – was a huge inspiration for my fic La Vie en Rose (with a liberal dash of Hito’s Roman Holiday, o'course).
For instance, there's a scene in season three, after Christopher once again leaves Lorelai and Rory in the lurch, another broken promise for a future together. He comes to Friday Night Dinner to confront Lorelai for what he believes is her part in Rory cutting him off. She tries to avoid it, and you can tell in every line of her body that it is killing Lorelai to be in the same room with him, but you can also tell how much Christopher wishes he could be someone different. Not the guy that has let a woman he adores (as well as his first love) and his daughter down one more time, or a guy that is forever linked by another unplanned pregnancy to a woman, who for all intents and purposes, was his ex. I physically ached for the both of them in that scene. Plus we get the added bonus of Emily Gilmore in fine form, telling Christopher to leave because he is hurting her daughter.
I've just never seen that kind of intensity, or give and take, in a scene with Lauren and Scott Patterson. I don’t care about the ongoing rumors about their off screen relationship because that’s a cop-out. These are two (supposed) professionals, and God bless her, Lauren does put in her all, every time. She is, after all, Lauren FREAKING Graham. I just don’t think Scott P. possesses the chops necessary to really bring that kind of intensity, or to be that emotionally willing to dive in headfirst into a scene of that kind of magnitude.
Anyway, in other news, they're fucking with my radio again. I don't know what the hell is up with Houston radio, but in the past year or so they’ve just been switching everyone around, up, and sideways. Now they're getting rid of Maria Todd and Atom Smasher on 104.1. Soon, Ruela and Ryan, formerly of 96.5, will be taking over the morning timeslot. Now to give you a better picture of what is causing my little temper tantrum, just a few months ago Ruela and Ryan were ousted inexplicably from their morning haunt on 96.5. In their place, Sam Malone, long-time DJ, who just last year, in a somewhat heroic, somewhat asinine manner, quit his position as lead DJ for the 104.1 morning show ON AIR, out of nowhere.
For the love of GOD, RADIO PEOPLE, this is my ENTERTAINMENT, the pacifier that sees me through traffic with as little stress and yelling as possible! DON'T FUCK WITH THE FUCKING FORMULA!! Argh.

A more apt comparison has never been made.
God that was good.

What I'm trying to say is that no matter his many fuck ups along the way, the guy has grown up a LOT over the past two seasons, and for that I have to give him kudos. Some guys would have taken his sizable inheritance, his fiancée abandoning him and their child, and allowed themselves to wallow, to regress. Not Christopher. He's almost all growed up. *wipes away tears of pride*
Also, I just love the guy.
And while I think Luke was a total jackass last season, it really was rather low of Lorelai to go and do that. (Way to be Logan, Lorelai.)
I don't see it that way. Because of Luke's decision to not only keep his daughter a secret from her BUT then decides to keep April from meeting this woman he purports to love and wants to marry, I think Lorelai was in the right. Luke was more than a jackass this season. He was an unfeeling oaf who wanted their relationship on his terms and his terms alone. That Lorelai didn't kick his insensitive ass to the curb earlier is the truly amazing part.
If her sleeping with Christopher had followed some random fight with Luke, I would have called foul. However, after that kind of fight and breakup, I would have been surprised had she not done something stupid. Unfortunately, she chose to do her something stupid with a guy who is still very much in love with her, but he's also an ex. And the father of her child. She sought out a familiar connection, and I can't hate on her for it. In fact, all I want to do is give her a big ol' hug, and to promise her that the next time I see Luke, I'll be sure to give him a swift kick to the shin.
Surely Luke has issues about her always being bonded to Chris through Rory. Why couldn't they have explored that? Or even go the Rory/Luke route with how he was at her graduation and moved her into Yale, while David Sutcliffe was on another show.
I would have LOVED to see that, but unfortunately that ship has sailed. ASP and DP really dropped the ball in that respect. So what if the actor is on another show? Why, if Christopher is currently a part of Rory's life, didn't they show a quick phone call prior to her graduation. Maybe Gigi was sick? I mean, a million different little things could have explained his absence, but to go on any further would tread too far into fanwankery. Plus, with regards to the move to Yale, that could have easily been explained away by the scheduling mix-up.
Sigh. It breaks my heart, the many ways they dropped the ball over the years – it’s of Roswellian proportions at this point. But that has been a complaint for the last several seasons, especially with so many townie storylines figuring so prominently of late. Guh. When I think about season 1, how perfectly it straddled the line between wacky and the dramatic, it makes me want to pretend everything since has been an increasingly crappy dream.

I'm disappointed in Amy and Dan for several reasons, but they always disappointed me when they would have all this build up, and it would not lead anywhere. What was the point of Lorelai lecturing Jess and then him getting concert tickets? (Face/Off was on ABCFam today.) Were we just supposed to think he was starting to get caught up in Walmart work? Why couldn't he have just listened to Rory's message anyway? (I know I know, because he needed to go make a spin-off and not tell Rory, so their relationship had to be strained.)
What was the point of Lorelai being all concerned about what Rory was doing with Logan and then doing nothing about it? Will they EVER address Rory and Lorelai not talking anymore?
It'd be one thing to not set it up. But don't do that and then not follow through...

Of course, we could both talk about this until we're blue in the face, so I'll end it there.
Now as for the Palladinos raining disappointments down on our heads? Oh, hell yes. This is the problem when a creator/executive producer maintains that much control over her show. I don't know if it was ego, or that she couldn't let go enough to let others take the reins every once in awhile, or what. It's a shame, because she basically painted herself into a corner on multiple occasions.
Despite my many misgivings about his past indescretions, I hope David Rosenthal proves to be a much-needed breath of fresh air for the series and will give it the send off it deserves.
