Last week, whilst I sat in the theater waiting for Walk the Line to start, some people claiming they had trekked all the way from Hollywood, came in with a little mega-phone and asked if anyone wanted free passes to a screening for Alphadog next Wednesday. Since I'm all about the free movie passes, I raised my hand.

So last night, after filling out a little questionnaire and standing in a never-ending, slow-ass-moving line, I saw the movie. It's directed by Nick Cassavetes and details the exploits of one Johnny Truelove, the fictionalized version of Jesse James Hollywood, a small-time hood infamous for being the youngest person ever to grace the FBI's Top Ten Most Wanted list.

The film was good, enjoyable even. The split-screen was used effectively and the music was minimal and what was there was used to great effect. Scenes flowed naturally and the chemistry between the actors felt natural and organic (including a surprisingly convincing turn by Justin Timberlake), producing a world where such a horrifying event could take place. In a world where drugs are like candy, parents are more interested in being their children's friends, and their wealth fosters an intense boredom, it is no wonder what started out as a lark turned into a tragedy.
