rubykatewriting: (They Really ARE)

Mom and the Grandmother are in Idaho with the rest of the family. My cousin Zeebert will officially become an Eagle Scout this week – Saturday (I think?). I'm not there because I was saving up my vacation time for July when Rae was supposed to come, but she totaled her car back in January (her and Zeebert were in the car and hit a pothole and a patch of black ice at the same time, but thankfully they only suffered some bruising and minor whiplash). What money she had saved up dried up pretty quickly, so, no Rae this summer. I made sure to guilt her mightily when she called for my birthday on Sunday. (If she had come, it would have meant we only missed seeing one Harry Potter movie together, which considering she's lived half a country away [half a world for those two years when the family was stationed at Pearl Harbor] for most of her life, is a pretty good average.)

(Side note: why I love Rae so much? She was talking about this major test she has today, an essay regarding language [basically it all comes down to reading comprehension] and she said that what she really wanted to do was write this kickass essay and then end it with, "FUCK YOU, AP CLASS. I'M NOT TAKING ANOTHER FUCKING AP CLASS EVVVVVERRRRRR AGAIN!" This then led to the discussion of said essays and how they are graded. It involves sequestering a bunch of teachers from all over the area in some room somewhere, and they just go through 500+ essays over several days. I said, "I would like break something – I would break my leg to get out of that." Rae: "I'd throw myself off a building." Me: "Yeah, they could totally wheel you in if all you had was a broken leg." Rae: "Now if you're jelly, eh, not so much." Oh, Rae, never, ever change. Also? She is firmly on board for my move to LA. This is predicated on the knowledge that I will have her visiting as often as is possible for a college freshman.)

I finally got to the movies last night to see 28 Weeks Later. My overwhelming response was despair. Fucking HELL. The hope you're left with post-28 Days Later isn't found in the sequel. My stomach was in knots from the prologue on. The worst of it is, you know the moment Don bites Andy, the moment Tammy leads Andy out of the subway, it’s all fucking over.

The young actors who portrayed Tammy and Andy (holy fuck, I swear, Mackintosh Muggleton is a mini-Taylor Kitsch) were wonderful. I love that the director made sure to make them natural – neither is preternaturally wise or precocious. They're, just as kids are every day of the fucking year, at the whims and wills of the adults around them, and this placed a glaring spot light on it. From the moment Don lied to them about what happened, he set their fates in stone. And as much as I love the current TV trend of portraying the brother/brother dynamic, my favorite has always been older sister/younger brother.

I also enjoyed the dynamic between Scarlet and Doyle. Their joint single-mindedness when it came to getting Tammy and Andy to safety, partly (at least on Doyle’s part) because they were just kids, even at the cost of their own lives, was heartening amongst all the despair and made their deaths – especially Doyle’s – so much more moving.

The more I think about it, the more I love it.

Although one nagging plot point, that of Don’s zombie mission, was a bit of a puzzle. I suppose it’s meant to illustrate that what we do in life will come to haunt us. He loved Alice and his kids, but he also hated them for being living, glaring reminders of his own weakness when it really mattered. Or something. Perhaps I’m pulling that completely out of my ass. But his need to kill his entire family was like erasing them from record, thereby erasing his own weakness. Huh. I need lunch before I start the whole philosophizing shit.

And I finally found a picture of Jensen Ackles with a beard where I actually find him quite attractive. The ginger beard – he's just like my cousin (and Dave Annable). He must have a red head in the family.
