Carmen Van Kerckhove over at Racialicious put up a list of The 5 most fascinating Asian male TV characters right now. There are the usual suspects in there (Hiro Nakamura, Jin Kwon) but her pick for #5 made me squee.

5. Detective Mike Tao on The Closer
Played by: Michael Paul Chan
You can watch it: on TNT though they’re on hiatus right now
Okay, so he’s the tech guy on the team and you could argue that that’s a bit stereotypical for an Asian character, but he’s incredibly respected by his peers and his bosses. And perhaps most importantly, he has no accent! That’s right, he’s just a regular American cop. There’s no particular reason for him to be Asian on the show. He’s smart as hell and cool in a quiet sort of way.
And she's right. He KICKS SO MUCH ASS, and when his character was off on vacation, the team (and the show) felt off, as if there was something fundamental missing. That, in a nutshell, is why the show generally rocks - aside from the consistent acting, characterization and storylines - it shows and celebrates how much they've grown as a team, how vital each member has become since Brenda Leigh Johnson (one of the best female characters on the air) took over.
If you haven't been watching, they're currently re-airing season two at 9pm (8pm central) on Tuesday nights leading up to the premiere of season 3 in (hopefully) June. They also had a two-hour special in December that blissfully resolved the season 2 cliffhanger.
So, check it out.

But I must say, I'm a Brenda/Fritz fan all the way.
