Excellent piece from The Nation (link provided by [livejournal.com profile] hana_ginakawa) Race to the Bottom, in which Betsy Reed discusses the longer reaching implications of HRC's tactics in this primary race, i.e., playing the race card. Personally, I think she's royally screwed any female from running for the next several years, if not decades, and it really grates my cheese how she's successfully divided the feminist movement. Yes, it IS horrible the misogyny she has faced in this election, but her win-at-all-costs, fuck-the-party ideals are just beyond the pale.

And [livejournal.com profile] war4l posted Tim Wise's EXCELLENT Of National Lies and Racial Amnesia: Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama, and the Audacity of Truth on [livejournal.com profile] ontd_political. I can't even fully articulate how amazing this is, only tell any and everyone to read it.

It's interesting--a researcher at JHU just did a study on media coverage of women running for president, and how it is significantly lower than the coverage given to male candidates. She compared that to coverage given to women running for congressional and lower positions and determined that the problems female candidates for president face are much more significant that women running for other offices, probably because they're still treated as an oddity and a risk. The article concluded that more women need to run to make the coverage more even.

While the Democratic party is coming out of this primary bruised, it's not broken. It has shown me that this two party system is inherently unfair. I almost hope Hillary runs as an independent.

I want to see a woman as president in my lifetime. Sooner rather than later; however, I truly believe Hillary hurt future runners. Not to mention what she's helped by way of her supporters do to the feminist movement.

I almost hope Hillary runs as an independent.
That would be monumentally stupid on her part since all the data shows that Obama fairs better with the independents, not to mention she's all but lost the black vote and she'd need them to win. I seriously doubt she'd be anything but a blip on the radar as the Independent candidate.

If she ran, McCain would probably win. Which isn't really something I want. But, it would be the first time since Perot that a third candidate got a nice chunk of votes.
