IS NOTHING SACROSANCT??!! I don't want you guys reading comics, it hurts my head. I did not spend my teenagedom having to justify comics so that everybody could turn around and decide comics are cool. I want things to go back to the way they were, when comics and sci-fi was for geeks and geeks were marginalized.
Hee! That’s right, comic book geek, comic books are hitting the mainstream!
But, hey now, I've been watching Heroes since day one and that's basically comic book put on film, so yeah. Also? This will probably be the only comic book(s) I ever read and not for lack of trying. I'm just hoping Xander and Buffy finally stop denying that they lurve each other because that's really all I want out of this series. Well, and I like the idea of all those slayers out there and it seems that's going to be one of the main themes they explore. That was one of the only things I actually liked about season seven.
You know, Joss Whedon has a lot of comics under his belt. He already did Fray, which takes place in the future Buffyverse, and he's currently writing Astonishing Xmen, which is extremely popular. He also wrote some Firefly comics that lead up to the movie.
I had heard about Fray (sadly, only because of Cassie Claire), but I didn't know anything about Firefly comics. Huh. Anything interesting happen in those? Like, say an explanation how they went from that final scene in "Objects in Space" to the start of Serenity? (That's my main tiff with the movie.)
I haven't seen them, but I imagine addressing that issue would be the point. Actually, I quit comics, and apart from sometimes d/ling them, or reading them in the store, I don't really look at them. To be honest, mostly I think they suck. Over at scans_daily, a lot of the art folks post is crap, IMO. I quit when a writer I was following quit, and was replaced by a writer who was retconing the story. I finally understood the story would never be done and this new, pale version of it would just be frustrating. So I stopped.
Wow. That's kind of sad, actually. You've been into them since you were a kid. But I kind of agree with you. Better to quit when things are only starting to really go down the shitter. Saves you at least some of the bitterness.
I'm torn on buying it because I've never been a comics person, and I'm so worried the whole BUFFY experience won't come through without SMG et al to act it out for me. Plus, I fear Joss, just a little bit. I don't want anyone else to die! I'm sure I'll end up caving and getting it though.
Oh, and hi, I just friended you as I think you watch and talk about every show I'm currently watching.
Oh, I totally get that, but I have accepted (finally) that I am Joss's bitch and have decided to just cut out the whole hemming-and-hawing. It saves time. So, yeah. Ordered it but with some quibbles.
Well, you could pre-order it from Things From Another World and they'll deliver it straight to your door. That's what I did, mostly for the convenience and the whole avoid-awkward-meeting-with-old-friend's-parents/brothers (they own the only comic book store near me).
Also? Dude. This monitor that used to work with my mom on one of her studies way back in the day complained quite a bit about San Diego. She said you could find tons more cultural offerings here in Houston because basically you have the beach and the zoo and the Navy in SD. Shame since it's so frickin' gorgeous down there. My uncle loved it when he was stationed there.
Ehh, that requires effort. Filling out stuff and paying for shipping. I'm lazy. :P I'll just wait till Spring Break. It's only a week and a half away and there's a comic book store two blocks from my house in LA and one two blocks from my best friend's house.
I feel like there's no life in San Diego. I do profiles for arts events for my internship and it's the same old play or museum exhibit every time. Nothing very interesting and nothing you can't see somewhere else.
Also, it's not all pretty. San Diego has a very constructed sunny, tourist image. That's only coastal SD. SD county is a lot bigger than that and very disconnected. LA's a big city, but all the areas have a connection. It's not like that in SD.
I'm lazy. Hee. Yeah, but you're a more motivated kind of lazy. See, my lazy, avoiding way of getting the comics involves tippy-tappy on the laptop whilst reclining in bed. You actually want to go out and go somewhere. I'm a rung below you on the lazy ladder.
I feel like there's no life in San Diego. I do profiles for arts events for my internship and it's the same old play or museum exhibit every time. This makes me feel like I'm not fully appreciating how good I have it. I mean, the Museum of Fine Arts is just a bus stop down the way from work and Thursdays are free. I could be thisclose to Renoir and van Gogh and I'm not availing myself of it like I should. Must change that STAT.
SD county is a lot bigger than that and very disconnected. LA's a big city, but all the areas have a connection. As Houston has grown, it's become a lot more connected. It isn't any big thing to spend an hour on the freeway going from one end of the city to other. The only problem is that public transportation hasn't kept up with that growth (as it is rather sprawled out) so Houston is a very car-centric city (hence, Chicago's initial appeal). And don't even get me started on the stupidity of utilizing a ground rail system in a city that is below sea level and as a result floods regularly. During Allison, the medical center had riverfront property, a river formally known as Holcombe Boulevard.

God, I cannot wait to get out of this city.
